New design launched late October 2020
The common frog is our most well known native amphibian. It is widespread across the UK and is often found in or around garden ponds in spring during the breeding season. They can help gardeners by feeding on flies, slugs, snails and worms. Their colour varies from grey, olive green and yellow to brown with irregular dark blotches. The female lays thousands of spawn (eggs) in a clump in shallow water. From eggs they develop into tadpoles which then take up to sixteen weeks to grow into froglets. During the winter they hibernate in pond mud, under piles of leaves or log piles.
