These four characterful musicians are based on medieval stone carvings found in Beverley Minster in Yorkshire. From top right and going clockwise the men are playing: a lute, two horns, a hurdy-gurdy and a tambourine. The Minster has over 70 stone and wood carvings depicting 20 different instruments, believed to be the world’s largest collection of carvings of this type.  ‘If music be the food of love play on’ is Duke Orsino’s opening line at the beginning of Shakespeare’s comedy play ‘Twelfth Night’.
