This design is based on the central panel of a Roman mosaic discovered at St. Nicholas Street, Leicester, England in 1898. The rather magnificent peacock came from a Roman town house and has since been moved to the Jewry Wall Museum. Romans believed that the peacock represented paradise, renewal and spring, possibly because the elaborate feathers grew each spring. Many wealthier Romans were known to have kept peacocksto roam around their gardens.
