A new design based on the Great Spotted Woodpecker which is widely found throughout the UK. These birds have well defined black and white plumage except the male has a red patch at the back of the head. Territory is established by drumming their beaks on trees at up to 40 strikes per second. Woodpeckers prefer dead trees make their nests or trees with rotting heartwood as this is softer to excavate than living wood. The nest can hold up to six eggs with chicks spending around 3 weeks before fledging. Their diet is mainly beetle larvae but they will also eat caterpillers and spiders. They are also frequent visitors to well stocked bird feeders.
