New! Dragonflies first evolved some 300 million years ago though their fossilised ancestors had wingspans of up to two feet. The eggs are laid in water where they hatch into larvae (nymphs). After a couple of years they crawl out of the water. They shed their skin allowing the body and wings to harden to become the beautiful dragonfly we often seen flitting around near water during the spring and summer breeding seasons. The large eyes make up most of the head and they see in nearly all directions. Their movement in any direction and ability to hover like a helicopter is a marvel of the natural world
