This green man is from a roof boss found in the crypt, known as the Black Prince’s Chantry or the Huguenot Chapel of Canterbury Cathedral. These carved heads sprouting foliage are based on Pagan superstitions and folklore. This imagery was incorporated into the decoration of many Christian churches and cathedrals from the Medieval Period. The green man is thought to be a symbol of rebirth or growth each spring.
