The design is based on medieval floor tiles found at Strata Florida Abbey in Wales. The griffin is a mythical beast; part lion and part eagle is thought to be a symbol of courage, boldness, intelligence and strength. Representations of griffins in Ancient Iranian and Egyptian art date back to before 3000 BC and it is often portrayed as a guardian of treasures.
