This design is based on the traditional skep. These baskets were made of coiled grass or straw with a small entrance hole. The bees create their honeycombe structure inside. However, the removal of honey was difficult and the development of wooden hives took their place. 'To bee or not to bee' is a play on words from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Although bee populations are in decline research is hopeful of reversing this trend.
