New design launched late October 2020
This charismatic, energetic, bushy tailed animal is now a rare sight in the UK. With the introduction of the grey squirrel in the 1800’s, the red squirrel has rapidly declined and become isolated in areas of Scotland, Northumberland, Lake District, Anglesey, Brownsea Island and Isle of Wight. Their woodland habitat provides a diet of pine seeds and hazelnuts. Beatrix Potter wrote a children's story about an impertinent red squirrel in The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, in which Nutkin and his cousins sail to Owl Island to collect nuts but he has a narrow escape after taunting Old Brown.
