The sun is based on a 17th century painting from the Church of St Peter & St Paul in Muchelney, Somerset. There was a church dating from Saxon times on the site but the existing church dates from the 15th century. The sun is found on the nave ceiling and is surrounded by rather racy Jacobean paintings of bare-breasted angels. Apparently these were thought to symbolise innocent purity!
