This design is based on 17th century Dutch Delft tiles depicting three tulips. Delftware is a style of blue glaze on a white background developed as an alternative to the imported expensive blue and white Chinese porcelain. Tulip mania was a brief spell from 1635 to 1637 when the price of tulip bulbs escalated to unimaginable heights. At it’s peak a single famous bulb, such as ‘The Viceroy’ or ‘Semper Augustus’, were exchanging hands for more money than most people earned in a year.
